‘Cloak of invisibility’ gets even closer to reality

cbc news

Scientists are getting much closer to achieving a perfect “cloak of invisibility,” this time using a diamond-shaped device to help clean up some of the loose ends from previous attempts.

Building on research done in 2006, electrical engineers at Duke University in Durham, N.C., have improved how the edges of their “cloak” work, allowing light to pass around an object without reflections so that the human eye can’t see it. Light waves are bent around the object, making it appear not to be there.

The trick was to use a diamond-shaped cloak developed by graduate student Nathan Landy with properties carefully matched at the diamond’s corners, to move light waves perfectly around a cylinder.

The researchers say they have used “a similar row-by-row design” to previous attempts, but added copper strips to create a more complicated — and better performing — material.

The results of their work were published Nov. 11 in the online journal Nature Materials.

David R. Smith — who worked on the previous research — and Landy say the new findings could be important in transforming how light or other waves can be controlled or transmitted.

In the same way that wires gave way to fiber optics, the new meta-material could change the way light and waves are transmitted.

In earlier attempts, the materials used allowed for some “wave loss,” which meant people could see cloaked objects around the edges. The effect was akin to being able to see reflections in a piece of clear glass, while still seeing through it .

“Since the goal was to demonstrate the basic principles of cloaking, we didn’t worry about these reflections,” Landy said in a Duke release.

Those reflections have now been reduced using a different strategy with added copper strips. The original cloak consisted of parallel and intersecting strips of fiberglass etched with copper.

“This to our knowledge is the first cloak that really addresses getting the transformation exactly right to get you that perfect invisibility,” Smith told BBC News.

“It’s like the card people in Alice in Wonderland. If they turn on their sides, you can’t see them, but they’re obviously visible if you look from the other direction.”

The research was partly funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and the Army Research Office.

Army scientists earn patent for advanced neural chip

By David McNally, RDECOM , www.army.mil

Ronald E. Meyers delves into quantum physics research at the U. S. Army Research Laboratory. Meyers, fellow researcher Keith Deacon and Gert Cauwenberghs, a professor of bioengineering and biology at the University of California at San Diego earned a patent for a futuristic neural computer chip.

ADELPHI, Md. (Army.Mil) — Two Army scientists and a university professor earned a patent for the forerunner of a powerful quantum neural dynamics computer chip. The device uses nonstandard mathematics to accomplish analog problem solving at high speed.

“The patent covers different ways to make computer chips,” said Army scientist and principal investigator Ronald E. Meyers. “These computer chips can represent biological and physical processes.”

Meyers and his colleague, Army mathematician Keith Deacon, joined forces with Gert Cauwenberghs, a professor of bioengineering and biology and co-director of the Institute for Neural Computation at the University of California at San Diego.

“This is as a first step toward large-scale non-Lipschitz intelligent information processing systems,” Cauwenberghs said.

Cauwenberghs worked with Meyers and Deacon to map the mathematics onto an analog “continuous-time neural architecture.” He also designed and tested the integrated circuit implementing the architecture.

“Experimental data from our silicon integrated circuit demonstrated the elements of terminal repulsion and attraction in neural dynamics and synaptic coupling,” he said.

In other words, by using different mathematics, the scientists potentially removed a limit on how fast functions can change — clearing the way for ultra high-speed computing.

“The chip has a lot of application to both the military and civilian use,” Meyers said.

A unique aspect of the research is the use of synaptic connections for interfacing neurons and learning through feedback, which is modeled after biological systems, Meyers said.

It’s all part of the futuristic vision of quantum computing. Researchers believe one day they will effectively harness individual atoms to build complex super-computers.

Meyers delves into quantum physics research projects at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. Currently his project is to invent a secure communications system immune to the awesome power of future quantum computers.

“Quantum computing will give unparalleled computational ability,” he said. “We’re talking about an ability to compute that exceeds exponentially millions of times greater than any of the computers that exist or are on the drawing boards using conventional approaches.”

Meyers said neural chips can be made with classical computers or in the future with quantum computers.

“This is a different type of chip that we’ve developed and it’s somewhat in between,” Meyers said. “It’s not a classical approach, and it’s not quantum yet. But, we’re wanting to evolve the concepts into quantum computing.”

The research took several years. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued a patent Sept. 11.

“It looks like a breakthrough to others but it’s just a lot of hard work, continuous work,” Meyers said. “When you put something out it’s a milestone. It means you’re able to explain it in a way that the Patent Office understands, or that other scientists understand. So what happened here is we’re looking into one of the most important problems that the Army faces and it turns out — from my perspective, the ones that are not solved and are most important.”

Meyers is listed as the inventor on 14 patents. He co-authored a book, “From Instability to Intelligence: Complexity and Predictability in Nonlinear Dynamics,” — covering nonlinear equations in math, physics and biology, and authored a plethora of scientific papers.

“Problems are unsolved because they’re difficult to tackle,” he said. “I tend to seek out a different path to go toward solving problems that before have not been solved. I think I have a background that can do that. I’ve gained some insight. It’s putting together your experience and you’re trying to project it into the future. And so in my mind I see how things can be applied in the future and I look at how to solve these. Quite often if you go for the hardest unsolved problem, that’s the one that gives you the most benefit.”

Inspired by difficult problems, Meyers said he and his small team of scientists and mathematicians is focused on the end-user of this technology.

“We work for the Soldier,” Meyers said. “We work for the warfighter and that’s what our thinking is. That’s why we’re trying to solve these difficult problems. As Army scientists we are responsible to really help these Soldiers operate in a way that can defend the country and protect them and anticipate any threats and deal with them in an effective manner.” ALSO SEE:Biometric surveillance meets nanotechnologyVerichip Corp. Biometric surveillance meets nanotechnology

Are we living in the last days of being wild and ‘natural’ humans? We take for granted that our thoughts are private, owned by us, and always will be.

The other day, I took some photos of wild geese in Canada, but when I blew up the photos, I was dumbfounded to see white plastic collars on their necks, with numbers. These tracking numbers were RFID tags of sorts. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Devices), is a tracking technology.

RFID technology is currently used on banking, library books, pets, cattle, autos, medications, and some humans (such as for patient identification purposes). The replacement of bar codes in grocery stores is another application of RFID chips, for the stated purpose of expediting the ‘checking out process’. YES, it is true, there are conveniences associated with RFID technology, but it boils down to tracking. Tracking sounds like being organized, or civilized. But when tracking goes into every facet of our lives, it has chilling consequences.

Today, there are beta tests being conducted in some schools, in Florida, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana. This is to track children, if they get to class on time, or, spend too much time where they should not. They are being required to wear tracking necklaces.

Tracking, and surveillance of ‘smart’ things (phones, cards, chickens), are, in theory ‘keeping us safe’. Already, the US Department of Agriculture demands that ranchers use RFID chips to monitor their livestock. Tracking things is one thing, but tracking your biology?

RFID systems generally consist of a transponder and reader. The reader is usually connected to a computer database. RFID chips have been around for a while. In fact, it is sophisticated enough that people are concerned about their information being stolen just upon walking in an airport, for instance.

But, now comes the ‘fun’ part: nanotechnology, the atomic and molecular computing technology, merging with RFID.

Imagine a strand of hair with several hundred computers on it. These can track all sorts of things including biology, or biometrics. The science fiction story, 1984, by George Orwell seems to be unfolding with precision.

Now that nanotechnology is quickly emerging, RFID chips can be implanted under the skin…and at some point, will not be visible. Think about computer tracking under your skin, with external readers, and data collection mining. Creepy.

Tracking health, your body fluids, your power usage, your whereabouts, your money, your food, eventually, your thoughts? No problem? Besides your information potentially ‘leaking’ out such as your banking, social security number, or health status, think about atomic sized ‘machines’, potentially going into your cells. That sounds unimaginable with really weird possible problems where the human being will become more mechanized, than human – transhuman?.

Fusion centers are being built across the USA to store the surveillance data in many fields. There are far reaching implications in these rapidly changing industries. Where do we draw a limit to how much tracking there is? Will we have a choice, or will our every move and biology be tracked, or, controlled? Stay tuned.

Pentagon developing robotic soldiers for future wars

The Pet-Proto robot (file photo)

The US Pentagon has begun a contest to advance its efforts to develop robotic soldiers to fight the wars of the future.

(PressTV) The DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC), which kicked off at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) conference center in Arlington, Virginia on Wednesday, focuses on testing robots’ abilities to work in difficult situations designed for humans that “simulate conditions in a dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environment.”

US officials and the designers of the robots say they are only being built to provide emergency services during disasters and have made no comments on any possible military applications.
The DRC has four tracks, with teams participating in tracks B and C competing for access to a modified version of the Atlas robot for use in live disaster-response challenge events in 2013 and 2014.

One of the robots, called Pet-Proto, a predecessor of DARPA’s Atlas robot, can maneuver over and around obstacles, using “capabilities, including autonomous decision-making, dismounted mobility and dexterity.”

DARPA project leader Gill Pratt says the DRC is “about trying to use robots to improve the resiliency of the US and world to natural and man-made disasters.”

According to DARPA’s $2.8 billion budget for 2013, the US military’s research arm intends to invest $7 million in a project to create robotic partners for its soldiers.

The project, called the Avatar Project, was devised to “develop interfaces and algorithms to enable a soldier to effectively partner with a semi-autonomous bi-pedal machine and allow it to act as the solder’s surrogate,” DARPA announced.

Earlier this year, DARPA released a video of the robodog, which is capable of hauling a soldier’s gear and following the soldier using its “eyes” — which are actually sensors that can distinguish between trees, rocks, terrain obstacles, and people.

Boeing has announced the first ever test of a new missile system known as Champ. Champ stands for Counter-electronics High-powered Advanced Missile Project. The goal of the project is to create a missile that can defeat any electronic target with little or no collateral damage.

The missile test was conducted on October 16 at 10:32 AM at the Utah Test and Training Range. The Champ missile was launched, and as it approached its first target, it fired a burst of High Power Microwaves into a two-story building built on the test range. Inside the building were rows of personal computers and electrical systems that were turned on to help gauge the effects that the missile would have on the electronic equipment.

According to Boeing, seconds after the missile passed over its target the PC monitors went dark as Champ knocked out computer and electrical systems in the target building.

“This technology marks a new era in modern-day warfare,” said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phantom Works. “In the near future, this technology may be used to render an enemy’s electronic and data systems useless even before the first troops or aircraft arrive,”

Boeing says that the television cameras that were set up to monitor the experiment were knocked off-line by Champ as well. The missile hit seven targets during the one-hour test that proved it was able to degrade and defeat electronics inside test buildings. The team working on the project is currently studying the data collected during the test.

“We know this has some capabilities and some impact, we’re really trying to engage the customer to see if there is a way we can actually get this fielded and implemented sooner than later,” Dodd said.

“Today we turned science fiction into science fact,” Coleman said.

The Champ missile had its first test in 2011.
